As western influences make their impact on the Warao, some people add walls to their houses, made from discarded lumber from the nearby sawmill. Their purpose, however, is most often to shield the family members from the hot westerly sun, rather than to provide privacy. Traditional roofs are made from thatch of the various palm trees.
